Surgical Tooth Extractions

At LAVAAN Smiles, preserving your natural teeth is always our primary goal. However, there are times when a tooth is too damaged, severely infected, or poorly positioned to remain safely in your mouth. When a tooth cannot be removed through a standard extraction, our highly skilled oral surgery team is here to provide gentle, stress-free surgical tooth extractions in a comfortable and reassuring environment.

Simple vs. Surgical Extractions: What’s the Difference?
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is fully visible above the gumline and can be easily grasped and removed in one piece.

A surgical extraction is a more complex procedure required when a tooth is not easily accessible. This typically involves making a small incision in the gum tissue to reach the tooth, and it may require removing a small amount of surrounding bone or carefully sectioning (dividing) the tooth into smaller pieces for safe removal.

Common Reasons for a Surgical Extraction
Our expert dental team will utilize advanced 3D imaging to evaluate your tooth and determine the safest extraction method. You may need a surgical extraction if you are experiencing:

Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Third molars often lack the necessary space to erupt properly, causing them to become trapped (impacted) beneath the gums or jawbone.

Severely Broken or Decayed Teeth: If a tooth is extensively decayed or fractured at or below the gumline, there is not enough tooth structure left to remove it simply.

Complex Root Anatomy: Teeth with exceptionally long, curved, or fractured roots often require a surgical approach to ensure the entire root is removed without damaging the surrounding bone.

Orthodontic Preparation: Sometimes, stubborn teeth must be surgically removed to create the necessary space in the dental arch before starting comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

Your Comfort is Our Top Priority
We understand that the phrase "oral surgery" can cause anxiety. Please rest assured that your comfort and safety are our highest priorities.

Before the procedure begins, we will make sure you are completely numb using highly effective local anesthesia. For patients who experience dental anxiety or are undergoing multiple complex extractions, we also offer safe sedation options—including Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) and IV Sedation—so you can relax or even sleep peacefully through your entire appointment.

What to Expect During Recovery
Following a surgical extraction, you will likely have a few self-dissolving stitches in your gums. Recovery is generally smooth and predictable when you follow our post-operative instructions:

Rest and Recover: Plan to take it easy for the first 24 to 48 hours. Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling.

Stick to a Soft Diet: Enjoy cool, soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and smoothies for the first few days.

Avoid Suction: Do not use straws, spit forcefully, or smoke for at least 72 hours, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful condition known as "dry socket."

Manage Discomfort: We will provide specific instructions for taking over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications to keep you comfortable as you heal.
