Protecting Your Child’s Future Smile in New York City

At LAVAAN Smiles, we know that baby teeth play a critical role in your child's overall dental development. When a primary tooth is lost prematurely due to decay, trauma, or congenital absence, it can disrupt the alignment of their future adult teeth. Custom space maintainers are a simple, proactive orthodontic solution to keep your child’s growing smile on track and prevent the need for complex treatments later on.

What is a Space Maintainer?
A space maintainer is a custom-made dental appliance designed to hold open the empty space left by a prematurely lost baby tooth. By acting as a placeholder, the device prevents the surrounding teeth from shifting or tilting into the empty gap, ensuring the underlying permanent adult tooth has enough room to erupt properly when the time comes.

Why Early Tooth Loss Matters
Primary (baby) teeth do much more than help your child chew and speak; they act as vital placeholders and guides for the permanent teeth growing beneath the gums. If a baby tooth falls out or is extracted before the permanent tooth is ready to emerge, the adjacent teeth will naturally drift into the newly available space.

Without intervention, premature tooth loss can lead to:

Severe crowding or overlapping of incoming permanent teeth.

Impacted adult teeth that become trapped under the gums due to a lack of space.

A misaligned bite (malocclusion) that negatively impacts chewing and jaw function.

The need for more extensive, costly, and invasive orthodontic treatments during the teenage years.

Types of Space Maintainers We Offer
At LAVAAN Dental, we evaluate your child's unique developmental stage to recommend the most effective and comfortable appliance. We offer both fixed and removable options depending on their age, which tooth is missing, and the size of the gap.

Fixed Space Maintainers
Fixed maintainers are semi-permanent appliances temporarily cemented to the teeth adjacent to the gap. They are highly effective for younger children who might struggle to keep track of a removable appliance.

Band-and-Loop: A stainless steel band is cemented around a back tooth, with a wire loop extending across the gap to rest against the next tooth.

Lingual Arch: Used when multiple lower baby teeth are missing, this wire sits behind the lower front teeth and connects to bands on the back molars.

Distal Shoe: Inserted under the gumline to guide the eruption of the first permanent molar when the baby molar is lost exceptionally early.

Removable Space Maintainers
Removable space maintainers look and function similarly to traditional retainers. They are typically constructed of acrylic and wire and can be taken out for eating and cleaning. These are generally recommended for older children who can reliably wear the device for the required number of hours each day.

Caring for Your Child's Appliance
Adapting to a space maintainer usually only takes a few days. To keep the appliance functional and your child's teeth healthy, we recommend the following daily habits:

Avoid Sticky Sweets: Chewy candies, gum, and taffy can easily get caught in the appliance or loosen the cement of a fixed maintainer.

Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene: Encourage your child to brush the appliance gently along with their teeth twice a day to prevent plaque buildup around the wires or bands.

Keep Regular Appointments: Our expert team will need to monitor the preserved space and track the emerging adult tooth through X-rays so we know exactly when it is time to remove the appliance.
