Phase I Interceptive Treatment
Phase 1 Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment
Proactive, Early Intervention for Growing Smiles in New York City
As parents, we want to set our children up for a lifetime of healthy smiles. While many people associate orthodontics with teenagers, the truth is that a proactive approach during childhood can prevent significant dental issues later on. At LAVAAN Smiles, our Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment—also known as early interceptive orthodontics—focuses on guiding your child's jaw development to create a healthy foundation for their future adult teeth.
What is Phase 1 Orthodontics?
Phase 1 treatment is a specialized, early phase of orthodontic care typically initiated between the ages of 7 and 11, while a child still has a mix of primary (baby) teeth and permanent teeth.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic screening by age 7. By this age, the jaw is still developing, and the first permanent molars have usually erupted. This allows our team to identify and correct structural issues with the jaw and bite before they become more severe and difficult to treat.
Signs Your Child May Need Early Treatment
Every child develops differently, but early intervention may be recommended if your child exhibits any of the following signs:
Bite Irregularities: Noticeable crossbites, underbites, or severe overbites.
Crowding or Spacing: Extreme crowding of the front teeth or significant gaps.
Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth: Losing primary teeth significantly outside the normal timeframe.
Harmful Oral Habits: Prolonged thumb sucking, finger sucking, or pacifier use past age four.
Breathing Issues: Chronic mouth breathing, snoring, or difficulty chewing and biting.
Protruding Teeth: Front teeth that stick out significantly, making them more vulnerable to trauma or injury.
The Benefits of Interceptive Care
The goal of Phase 1 is not necessarily to perfectly align all the teeth right away, but rather to correct underlying skeletal and developmental problems. Taking action early offers incredible long-term benefits:
Guides Jaw Growth: We can gently modify the growth of the jaw to accommodate emerging teeth and ensure the upper and lower jaws align properly.
Reduces Future Complexity: Phase 1 treatment often makes Phase 2 (traditional braces or clear aligners during the teen years) significantly shorter, easier, and less invasive.
Prevents Extractions: By creating adequate space in the mouth early on, we can drastically reduce the likelihood that permanent teeth will need to be extracted later.
Boosts Confidence: Correcting noticeable alignment or bite issues early can greatly improve a child's self-esteem during their crucial formative years.
Common Phase 1 Treatments
At LAVAAN Dental, we take a conservative approach, only recommending Phase 1 treatment when it will provide a clear, undeniable benefit to your child's oral health. Depending on your child's specific needs, treatment may involve:
Palatal Expanders: To gently widen a narrow upper jaw and correct crossbites.
Partial Braces: Braces placed only on the front teeth to correct severe crowding or protruding teeth.
Space Maintainers: To hold space open for permanent teeth if a baby tooth is lost prematurely.
Habit Appliances: Specialized devices designed to help children comfortably break thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habits.
