Creating Space for a Healthy, Beautiful Smile in New York City

At LAVAAN Smiles, we believe in proactive, preventative orthodontic care. Palatal expanders are a highly effective early intervention tool used to gently widen the upper jaw. By creating enough space for adult teeth to erupt properly, we can correct bite issues early and prevent the need for more complex, invasive treatments down the road.

What is a Palatal Expander?
A palatal expander is a custom-made orthodontic appliance that fits snugly against the roof of the mouth (the palate) and attaches to the upper back teeth.

In children and young teens, the upper jaw develops as two separate halves that do not fully fuse together until puberty. An expander takes advantage of this natural growth stage by applying gentle, constant outward pressure on the two halves of the maxilla (upper jaw bone), slowly widening the palate over time.

Why Might Your Child Need an Expander?
Palatal expanders are typically used during Phase 1 (Interceptive) Orthodontics, usually between the ages of 7 and 11. Our talented team may recommend an expander to address several common developmental issues:

Crossbite Correction: If a child's upper jaw is too narrow, the upper teeth may sit inside the lower teeth when biting down. An expander widens the upper jaw so the upper and lower teeth align perfectly.

Relieving Severe Crowding: By expanding the jaw, we create the necessary room for incoming permanent teeth to erupt naturally, often eliminating the need for future tooth extractions.

Improving Breathing and Sleep: The roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nasal cavity. Widening the palate inherently widens the nasal passages, which can drastically improve airflow for children who suffer from mouth breathing, snoring, or pediatric sleep apnea.

Impacted Teeth: Creating more space can help impacted teeth (teeth trapped under the gums, like canines) erupt into their proper positions.

What to Expect During Treatment
Living with a palatal expander is an adjustment, but most patients adapt very quickly within the first few days!

Turning the Expander: You will be given a small key and instructed to turn a gear in the center of the expander at specific intervals (usually once a day). This tiny turn is what creates the gentle outward tension.

Mild Pressure: After a turn, it is normal to feel mild pressure or a tingling sensation in the teeth, roof of the mouth, or even behind the nose. This typically fades within a few minutes and is rarely described as painful.

The "Expander Gap": As the two halves of the jaw separate, a noticeable gap will likely form between the top two front teeth. Don't panic! This is actually the best sign that the expander is working correctly. The gap will close naturally or be corrected during the next phase of orthodontic treatment.

Retention: Once the desired width is achieved, the expander is left in place for a few additional months to allow new bone to form and stabilize the expansion.

Proactive Care for Growing Smiles
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic screening by age 7. Early evaluation is the key to identifying jaw growth issues while they are still easily treatable.
