Oral Pathology Biopsies
Discovering an unusual lump, bump, or sore in your mouth can naturally cause anxiety. However, it is important to remember that the vast majority of oral abnormalities are completely benign (non-cancerous).
At LAVAAN Smiles, we take your comprehensive oral health seriously. Our expert team is highly trained in oral pathology—the identification and management of diseases affecting the mouth and jaws. Whether you need a routine screening or a diagnostic biopsy, we provide swift, compassionate care to give you the answers and peace of mind you deserve.
What is Oral Pathology?
The inside of your mouth is lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that should appear smooth and coral pink in color. Any alteration in this appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process. The most serious of these is oral cancer, but many other common issues—such as benign cysts, fungal infections, or immune-related ulcers—can also alter the tissues in your mouth.
Oral pathology focuses on investigating these changes, determining their exact cause, and creating a customized, effective treatment plan to restore your oral health.
Signs You Should Be Evaluated
Because you see the inside of your mouth every day, you are often the first to notice when something doesn't look or feel quite right. We recommend scheduling an evaluation if you notice any of the following symptoms lasting longer than two weeks:
Color Changes: Reddish patches (erythroplakia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) anywhere in the mouth.
Persistent Sores: A sore that fails to heal naturally and bleeds easily.
Lumps and Bumps: A noticeable thickening or lump on the inner cheeks, gums, lips, or tongue.
Throat Issues: A chronic sore throat, hoarseness, or a persistent feeling that something is caught in your throat.
Difficulty Functioning: Unexplained difficulty or pain when chewing, swallowing, or moving your jaw and tongue.
Note: Pathological changes are often completely painless in their early stages. Do not wait for a lesion to become painful before seeking a professional evaluation.
The Diagnostic and Biopsy Process
If we identify an area of concern during a routine exam or a dedicated consultation, our priority is to get you accurate answers as quickly and comfortably as possible.
Comprehensive Examination: We will thoroughly examine the soft tissues of your mouth, face, and neck, and review your medical history to understand your unique risk factors.
Gentle Biopsy: If a lesion looks suspicious, we will perform a minor biopsy. This usually involves applying local anesthesia to completely numb the area, followed by the removal of a tiny tissue sample. The process is incredibly fast and virtually painless.
Laboratory Analysis: The tissue sample is sent to a specialized oral pathology laboratory, where experts examine it under a microscope to determine an exact diagnosis.
Follow-Up and Next Steps: Once the results are in (usually within a week or two), we will personally walk you through the findings. If the tissue is benign, we will discuss ways to manage any discomfort. If it requires further treatment, we will coordinate closely with top local specialists to ensure you receive the highest standard of care.
The Importance of Early Detection
When it comes to oral abnormalities, time is of the essence. Catching and diagnosing issues early—especially oral cancer—dramatically increases the success rate of treatment and makes recovery significantly easier. This is why a thorough oral pathology screening is a standard part of every routine dental cleaning and exam at LAVAAN Smiles.
