Impacted Tooth Exposure & Bonding
A healthy, fully aligned smile requires every tooth to take its rightful place. However, sometimes a permanent tooth gets "stuck" beneath the gums and cannot erupt naturally. At LAVAAN Smiles, our collaborative team of dental experts uses a specialized, highly effective procedure known as Exposure and Bonding to gently guide impacted teeth into their perfect position, ensuring your smile is beautiful, functional, and complete.
What is an Impacted Tooth?
An impacted tooth is simply a permanent tooth that is blocked from breaking through the gumline. While wisdom teeth are the most frequently impacted (and are usually extracted), the maxillary cuspids (upper canine teeth) are the second most common.
Because your canine teeth are the "cornerstones" of your dental arch and play a critical role in your biting function and facial appearance, extracting them is rarely the goal. Instead, we want to save them and bring them into proper alignment.
Why Do Teeth Become Impacted?
There are several reasons a permanent tooth might fail to emerge correctly:
Severe Crowding: The dental arch is too small, leaving no physical space for the tooth to drop down.
Prolonged Baby Teeth: A primary tooth hasn't fallen out on time, blocking the path for the adult tooth underneath.
Extra Teeth (Supernumerary Teeth): Extra teeth can block the eruption pathway.
Unusual Growths: Rarely, harmless cysts or growths in the gums can obstruct a tooth.
Leaving an impacted tooth untreated can lead to serious complications over time, including damage to the roots of neighboring healthy teeth, cyst formation, or chronic gum infections.
The Exposure & Bonding Process
Treating an impacted canine is a collaborative effort that typically involves both orthodontic treatment and a minor oral surgery procedure. Our talented team at LAVAAN Dental will guide you seamlessly through every step:
1. Creating the Space (Orthodontics)
Before the tooth can be brought down, there must be room for it. Your treatment will usually begin with braces or clear aligners to open up the necessary space in your dental arch.
2. The Surgical Exposure
Once the space is ready, our skilled oral surgeon will perform a minor, routine procedure to "expose" the hidden tooth. Working under local anesthesia (or sedation for your ultimate comfort), the surgeon will gently push back the gum tissue to reveal the impacted tooth underneath.
3. The Bonding
During the same surgical visit, a tiny orthodontic bracket is carefully bonded (glued) to the newly exposed tooth. Attached to this bracket is a small, delicate gold chain. The surgeon will temporarily loop this chain onto your existing orthodontic wire.
4. Guiding the Tooth
Shortly after your surgery (usually within 1 to 2 weeks), you will return for an orthodontic adjustment. We will attach a rubber band to the gold chain to apply a very light, continuous downward traction. Over the course of several months, this gentle tension will safely pull the hidden tooth through the gums and perfectly into place.
What to Expect During Recovery
The exposure and bonding procedure is highly routine, and recovery is generally very smooth.
Mild Discomfort: You can expect some minor swelling, bleeding, or soreness in the gums for a few days, which is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers (like Ibuprofen).
Soft Diet: Stick to a diet of soft, cool foods (like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and smoothies) for the first few days to allow the surgical site to heal.
Gentle Hygiene: You will be instructed to gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water and avoid aggressively brushing the exposed area until it heals.
