Emergency Dental Care for Kids
A dental emergency can be incredibly stressful and scary for both you and your child. Whether it is a sudden toothache or an injury during a playground game, acting quickly is essential to saving their tooth and alleviating their pain.
At LAVAAN Smiles, our gentle and experienced pediatric dental team is here to provide fast, comforting, and effective emergency care to get your child back to smiling as quickly as possible.
What is a Pediatric Dental Emergency?
Children are naturally active, making them prone to bumps, falls, and sudden dental issues. You should contact us immediately if your child experiences any of the following:
Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsion): A permanent adult tooth being knocked completely out of its socket requires immediate attention to save the tooth.
Severe Toothaches: Persistent, throbbing pain that keeps your child awake or prevents them from eating is often a sign of deep decay or an infection.
Chipped, Broken, or Fractured Teeth: Even small chips can expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, leading to pain and vulnerability to infection.
Dental Abscess or Swelling: A pimple-like bump on the gums or significant swelling of the face, jaw, or neck indicates a serious, potentially dangerous bacterial infection.
Damaged Orthodontic Appliances: Broken brackets or poking wires that are actively cutting into your child's cheeks or gums.
Bleeding that Won't Stop: Continuous bleeding from the mouth after an injury or a recently lost baby tooth.
What to Do While You Wait
When an emergency strikes, try to stay as calm as possible to keep your child relaxed. Call our office right away, and follow these steps while you prepare to come in:
For a Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth: Find the tooth and pick it up by the chewing surface (the crown), never the root. Gently rinse it with water without scrubbing. If possible, gently place it back into the socket and have your child bite down on a clean gauze pad. If that isn't possible, place the tooth in a small container of cold milk or your child's saliva and bring it with you.
For a Knocked-Out Baby Tooth: Do not attempt to put a baby tooth back into the socket, as this can damage the permanent tooth growing underneath. Apply gentle pressure with gauze to stop any bleeding and call us for an evaluation.
For a Toothache: Have your child gently rinse their mouth with warm salt water. Use dental floss to carefully remove any food that might be trapped between the teeth. You can apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling and administer an over-the-counter, child-safe pain reliever. Never put aspirin directly on the gums.
For a Chipped or Broken Tooth: Have your child rinse their mouth with warm water. Try to locate any broken tooth fragments, place them in cold milk, and bring them to your appointment.
